Social media are now a part of our daily lives. Our students grew up with Instagram and Youtube, and every day the average student spends about 1 to 2 hours on social media (Perrin and Jiang, 2018). How, as instructors, can we use social media to engage students and harness their passion for social interaction? In this workshop, we’ll review various social media platforms, showcase examples, and share user analytics. Social platforms can be used to motivate students, share resources, and, more importantly, build connections and kinship lost in zoomed out, online setup. We’ll also examine some of the drawbacks of using these tools, including privacy matters, and identify how to address these challenges as we incorporate social media into our online instructions.
