Open Research emphasizes the importance of transparency for replicability and reproducibility of research, which can advance the overall impact of the work. Transparency includes developing open workflows, which show the steps taken and decisions made over the course of a research project: from conception to publication. Transparency of project processes and datasets (e.g., methodologies and data collection) can improve the research and help to advance knowledge.
This facilitated POSE Open Research Discussion will focus on an article by Hank Lee and colleagues (2025) who researched how Generative AI (GenAI) impacts perceptions of critical thinking skills and practices when using GenAI.
To prepare for this session, read the following article: The Impact of Generative AI on Critical Thinking: Self-Reported Reductions in Cognitive Effort and Confidence Effects From a Survey of Knowledge Workers. (Do not focus on the statistical models used for analyses, if that is outside your comfort zone, but on the research questions asked and summary of the results found.) As you read the outcomes, reflect on the following questions and bring your thoughts to the session:
- What in the article resonated with you? What differed from your own experiences?
- How have the authors modelled an open workflow?
About POSE
This session is being offered as part of the Program for Open Scholarship and Education (POSE) but it is open and everyone is welcome. POSE is an open, three-month flexible program aimed at helping educators gain foundational knowledge of open scholarship, open education, and open research. Register for POSE here.
