Over the past two decades, the open education and scholarship movement has championed ideals of accessibility, collaboration, and democratization of knowledge. However, as highlighted in The Paradox of Open manifesto, the digital landscape has evolved in ways that both support and challenge these ideals. The concentration of digital power among a few platforms, the shift from scarcity to abundance of information, and the emergence of closed sharing models within open frameworks present new complexities.
Additionally, GenAI is radically changing and impacting open scholarship and Anne-Marie Scott, in her article Copyright, Licensing, and Open Source AI examines the ethical and legal challenges of integrating generative AI into open education and advocates for the development of an education-focused AI commons, governed by educators and aligned with open-source principles, to ensure equitable and responsible use of AI in educational contexts.
As a conclusion to POSE and, after engaging the above two articles, we invite you to reflect on your personal vision for the future of open education in higher education. Consider the following questions to guide your response:
- What is your vision for the future of open scholarship and education in higher education? Where will it go next?
- Ideally, what should the future of open scholarship be? What opportunities exist to realize this vision, and what barriers might impede progress?
- How can we navigate the challenges that open scholarship and education are facing to uphold the principles and promises of openness? How do we get from where we are today to where we should be tomorrow?
Facilitators:
- Will Engle, Strategist, Open Education Initiatives, CTLT
- Rie Namba, Educational Research Developer, Open Resources, CTLT
- Lucas Wright, Senior Educational Consultant, Learning Technology, CTLT
