Are you interested in learning that takes students out of the classroom and into the community, even virtually? Shadi Mehrabi from UBC’s Centre for Community Engaged Learning and Professor of Teaching Tara Ivanochko will present an introduction to the principles, pedagogy, and practice of community engaged learning (CEL) and some examples of how CEL is being implemented here at UBC. In this session you can expect to get involved in thinking about how CEL tools and principles can be put to use in your context and you’ll learn where you can find the Centre for Community Engaged Learning and connect with their services in planning CEL courses. While this session will not focus on virtual CEL, we will provide examples of how CEL is possible and necessary even in a virtual world, as many community partners will need even more support in the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and many students will likely be enthusiastic about applying their classroom learning to relevant societal issues in this new era.

Facilitated by:

  • Shadi Mehrabi, Community Engaged Learning Officer, Centre for Community Engaged Learning
  • Tara Ivanochko, Professor of Teaching, Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences

Please ensure you have your own quiet space, a computer with a webcam and headphones or earbuds.
