Papers to Podcasts: How to Bring Audio Assignments into Your Course

Event Date & Time

  • March 11, 2024

Event Description

Online

Bringing podcasting and audio storytelling into class can be great way to tap into students’ creativity and give them a new and open way to share their academic efforts. And while students are often familiar with the conventions of podcasting, it can be a challenge to prepare students to create—and instructors to assess—audio assignments.

This session will use LFS 400, a longstanding podcasting course, as a case study in how to support students in audio making. We’ll also go over rubrics and strategies for scaffolding student learning.

About the Facilitator:

This session will be led by Duncan McHugh. Since 2006, Duncan has co-taught LFS 400, a podcasting/audio storytelling course at the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems, where he works as digital & instructional media producer. He is also a long-time volunteer at CiTR 101.9fm, where he hosts Duncan’s Donuts, a weekly music show, and was a long term board member. He has also served as technical instructor at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism and provides campus-wide workshops in podcasting.

This event will be hosted on Zoom.
