Event Description

Please click “Register Now” to register for this event. This event will be online on Blackboard Collaborate.

Discussions are (potentially) a great way to engage students in online learning environments.

They can be designed to cultivate a learning community and to scaffold content achievement in many ways, e.g., un-/graded,student-/instructor-lead, or group/individual. Asynchronous discussion activities allow students flexible time to reflect and opportunities to learn from peers.

When an instructor knows how to use and facilitate discussions effectively in course contexts, they will be able to create a more active and engaging course.

This session is for the instructors who are new to online teaching (or new to using asynchronous discussions) and want to incorporate discussions into their course in order to foster student learning.

Session objectives

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Reflect on their own experience of participating in an asynchronous online discussion
  2. List benefits of asynchronous discussions
  3. Identify effective pedagogical practices and facilitation approaches for effective discussions, including instructor presence
  4. Be aware of different types of asynchronous discussion activities and their purpose
  5. Consider discussion activities that may be most suitable for their teaching in Canvas

Prior to this session, we invite you to participate in an optional activity: an asynchronous discussion in Canvas. The activity, which asks you to respond to 1 or more discussion questions, will take 5-10 minutes of your time. To participate, please:
  1. Self enrol in the course Effective Discussion Design & Facilitation
  2. Once you are in the course, go to the Discussions section.
  3. Please respond to 1 or more questions in the discussion forum. You can respond to all the questions, or just a few–as you wish.
Please note that this activity is not mandatory. You are welcome to participate in the workshop on May 14 regardless of whether you have participated in the pre-session online discussion.
