Event Description

Thank you for your interest in the CDI, the application process for June 2020 is now closed.

The CDI will be offered remotely in June 2020 for faculty members who want to re/design a course they will be offering in September or later. The CDI provides a framework for course design and is not specific to a particular delivery method (such as remote teaching).

The Course Design Intensive (CDI) is an intensive program in which participants work, individually and collaboratively, to design or re-design a course they are (or will be) teaching. Throughout the workshop, participants will acquire a broadened understanding of course design concepts, and will gain skills and tools they can apply to their own course. The focus of the workshop is on having participants work with the major concepts and questions that need to be considered as they design a course. Ultimately, the goal of the CDI is to support instructors as they work to enhance their students’ learning.

Once you have completed this initial registration process for the CDI, you will be asked to complete a pre-survey to establish your eligibility for the CDI, and to ensure we best meet your needs during the CDI. Once you’ve completed the pre-survey, you’ll be contacted by email to complete your registration.

Upon completion of the Course Design Intensive you will be able to:

1.  Approach the design of your course from a learning centered orientation.

2. Apply principles of alignment to develop learning outcomes and select aligned assessment methods and learning activities.

3. Assess various learning activities and technologies for their value in supporting the learning outcomes you have developed and propose how they may be incorporated into your course design.

4.  Engage in peer learning as a means of enhancing your teaching practice and student learning.

Format of the CDI

The CDI is a three-day workshop, typically a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday, giving you two days in-between to independently work on your course design. Additional support is provided to you on the in-between days. The remote offering will follow this schedule, with a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities held throughout the three days.

The CDI takes a “flipped” approach to course work, and you will be asked to complete pre-work prior to the first day of the workshop, so that learning done on your own can be further developed in discussion together. You will also be required to continue to work on your course design plans and complete homework prior to each day of the workshop sessions.

June 2020 (remote offering)

The remote offering is a 3-day workshop, taking place on these dates:

  • Monday, June 8
  • Wednesday, June 10
  • Friday, June 12

The remote CDI will happen in ‘real-time’, with some of the workshop delivered synchronously through BB Collaborate, and other parts where participants will work on their own (asynchronously).Participants are requested to clear out their schedules for as much as the three days as possible (just as in the face-to-face workshop delivery), in order to progress on their course plans alongside the rest of the cohort.

There will be optional check-ins and small group consultations on Tuesday, June 9 and Thursday, June 11, for those looking for additional support on their course plans; as an example, some participants may desire particular support on designing for an online or remote environment.

Registration Deposit:

In order to confirm your CDI registration, you will be required to pay a $60 deposit. This deposit is refundable (via direct deposit) and will be returned to you upon successful completion of the workshop. If you have to cancel before the workshop starts or if you are otherwise unable to complete the workshop once it has started, the deposit cannot be refunded or transferred to another date or person.

Non-UBC and/or members who are not a part of the teaching and learning community are welcome to attend; however, you will be charged a participation fee of $600, which is non-refundable. The participation fee will be collected at the first session of the Intensive and a receipt will be provided.

*Registering through this page does not guarantee registration in the course – approval is based on participants responses to a survey, which will be sent out once a participant has filled out the online registration form. You will be notified if you have been accepted into the workshop*
