Event Description

Pillar: Transformative Learning

The Horizon Report is an annual report that has served to identify key technologies, practices and trends likely to influence higher education with horizons of under one year, two to three years and five years out. Until recently The Horizon Report – Higher Education has been published annually by Educause and the New Media Consortium (NMC) for over a decade and has generated a huge audience and started Horizon Reports specific for other sectors. The process behind creating the report involves a very broad scan of education, entertainment, consumer electronics and other fields followed by a modified Delphi process to come up with a short list tailored to the particular needs and constraints of the participants. The process behind the Horizon Project and Horizon Report can be modified to be localised to fit the constraints of any group but a useful report is for a campus to generate an institutional Horizon Report.

In this workshop, we will utilize the process that the Horizon Project uses to identify a list of candidate emerging technologies and practices that are specific to the UBC campus environment. We will then outline and demonstrate the process for narrowing down the list. This workshop will articulates the steps and processes that could be used to generate a UBC specific Horizon Report. Participants will leave the session with knowledge of the tools and mechanisms to conduct a modified Delphi process which can be used to create a localized Horizon Report. In addition this session will identify other resources useful in determining technologies and practices to be aware of for planning for the future.
