Teaching as a Scholarly Activity: Getting Started with Research in the Classroom

Series: CTLT Institute

Event Date & Time

  • August 20, 2018
    1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Event Description

In this panel discussion we will hear from four faculty members across UBC on their successful (and less successful) experiences in conducting research on their own teaching:

• Dr. Su-Jan Yeo, School of Community and Regional Planning
• Dr. Siobhan Mcphee, Department of Geography
• Dr. Phaedra Burke, Sauder School of Business
• Dr. Joss Ives, Department of Physics & Astronomy

The session will focus on conducting first steps in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Key topics will include coming up with useful and workable questions, identifying sources of help, do’s and don’ts, and SoTL as a research area.

This panel discussion will be facilitated by Drs. Ido Roll and Adriana Briseno as part of the Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISoTL; https://isotl.ctlt.ubc.ca/). ISoTL supports research and inquiry into teaching and learning, with the aim to deepen engagement of faculty members and experts in educational research from across campus to evaluate evidence-based practices in Higher Education, and to advocates for an effective reciprocity between research and practice in teaching and learning. Look forward to an engaging and interactive discussion at this session!
