Event Date & Time
January is Sexual Assault Awareness Month at UBC! Presented by UBC’S Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO), this workshop will provide information about UBC’s systems for preventing and responding to sexualized violence, explore risk factors and vulnerabilities experienced by TAs, and provide training on responding to disclosures and navigating power dynamics to reduce risk. Participants will explore the implications of the power dynamics TAs experience and practice a spectrum of prevention and response techniques.
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Activate and navigate UBC’s system for responding to sexualized violence
- Give a trauma-informed response to a disclosure of sexualized violence
- Dispel myths about the inevitability of sexualized violence
- Take action towards changing rape culture/creating a culture of consent
The TA Institute is open to all undergraduate TAs, graduate students who are interested in teaching, and all graduate student TAs. This session is not open to general undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows, staff, or faculty.
Sasha Wiley-Shaw is the Faculty and Staff Educator with UBC’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO). With a broad background in social justice education, feminist activism, and public policy, Sasha brings a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on experiential learning techniques to bridge theory and practice. Her workshops are informed by over a decade of work with students experiencing violence and marginalization and with Indigenous communities, providing content that is grounded in intersectional and systemic approaches to violence prevention.
