ISP Toolkit in Action Panel: Moving from Self-Assessment to Intent to Action

To help guide implementation of the Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP), the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (OISI) developed a set of tools which both academic and operational units can use to help situate themselves in relation to Indigenous engagement and create a plan that aligns their work with the ISP’s eight goals and 43 actions.

Many units, teams, and departments have begun working with the ISP Toolkit over the past few years. This panel is an opportunity to learn from their experiences and ask questions that will help you move forward. The session will cover the different components of the toolkit, with a particular focus on moving from the Self-Assessment to Intent-to-Action. 

The session is being hosted by the Indigenous Initiatives team at the Centre for Teaching Learning and Technology (UBCV), in collaboration with the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (UBCO) and Indigenous Programs & Services (UBCO)

Moderator

Janelle Kasperski (pronouns: She/Her) is a Nisga’a woman from Laxgalts’ap, BC. She is an educator, beader, artist, facilitator, writer, and Auntie advocate for Indigenous voices and success. She has been with UBC for a year and a half, working as the Specialist in Strategic Indigenous Enrolment Initiatives.  She has also worked for McGill University in the Office of the Provost as the Indigenous Education Advisor.  Her experience in educational institutions is grounded in the knowledges witnessed through working with Indigenous communities, as well as her own cultural and family teachings.

 

 

 

 

 

Panelists

Clara Ng is the Assistant Dean, Operations & Strategic Initiatives in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC’s Vancouver Campus. In her current role, she works closely with the Dean, the Dean’s Office and the Senior Management Team to advance the Faculty’s ISP and EDI initiatives. She led the Faculty’s ISP and IAP Self Assessments in 2022 and 2023. Her background is in accounting (CPA, CMA) and Clara is currently pursuing a doctoral program in the UBC Faculty of Education looking at decolonial financial practices in higher education.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Kimberly R. Huyser is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. She is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation and grew up on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, USA. Dr. Huyser received her BA from Calvin University in 2003 and her Ph.D. – Sociology in 2010 from the University of Texas at Austin with an Indigenous Studies Graduate Portfolio and a traineeship from the Population Research Center at UT, Austin. Her scholarship combines medical sociology and the sociology of race and ethnicity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dr. Sandy Hilton is Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning and Associate Professor of Teaching at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Management. Dr. Hilton joined the Faculty of Management in 2007 as one of seven inaugural faculty members before departing in 2013 to lead the national development of the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) professional education programs as Vice-President, Pre-certification Education. Dr. Hilton was recruited back to the Faculty of Management to serve as lead for the undergraduate program in 2019. Sr. Hilton served as Dean pro tem for the Faculty from February 2023 to June 2024.  Dr. Hilton is actively involved in UBC governance including serving on the UBC Board of Governors and the Okanagan Senate.  Dr. Hilton holds a Doctorate in Accounting from the University of Waterloo and subsequently completed a Master of Arts in Education from UBC.
