Event Description

In-person

This event is part of the CTLT Summer Institute, taking place from August 21–25, 2023.

Whether you are an instructor in the Humanities or Sciences, you most likely use writing as a learning and assessment tool. How students write (and feel about their writing) is integral to their sense of belonging in the university and their chosen fields as well as the successful completion of their degrees and preparation for future studies and professional careers.

This workshop invites participants to reflect on the role of writing in their classrooms and to apply an inclusive lens to their writing activities and assessments. Workshop facilitators will share a set of values and strategies for inclusive writing instruction and assessment that can be applied across the disciplines. Participants will discuss the use of writing in their own teaching contexts (challenges, successes, concerns, questions) and reflect on how one of their current writing activities or assessments connects to the inclusive writing values provided.

In this workshop you will:

  • come away with a set of shared values and strategies for inclusive writing instruction that can be applied across the disciplines
  • develop a shared understanding of how writing is used in different disciplinary contexts
  • reflect on how to improve or reinforce at least one writing activity or assessment that you currently use (or plan to use) in your own teaching

We invite workshop participants to bring (or have in mind) a writing activity or assessment they use (or plan to use) in their courses. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss that activity or assessment in relation to the inclusive writing values presented.
