Event Description

Pillar: People and Places, Transformative Learning

Teaching students with diverse identities and life experiences can challenge you with a wide range of perspectives and needs that you may never have thought about. How can you shift challenging moments in your teaching into transformative learning experiences not only for students but also for you as an educator?

This interactive workshop engages participants with a set of new case studies developed by teaching and learning community members at UBC. The case studies address the complexity of the issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning settings in different disciplines. In addition to classroom strategies, participants will explore how to advocate for more inclusive and equitable teaching and learning environments beyond their classroom – in their department and/or discipline. Through engaging with these case studies in small groups, participants will:

  • Identify key concerns around equity and inclusion addressed in the case scenarios.
  • Develop more inclusive and equitable teaching strategies for diverse learners.
  • Explore ways to expand support and advocacy for diverse learners beyond the classroom.

The target audience of the case studies, and of this session, is those who work in a teaching capacity (e.g., instructors, TAs). However, anyone who is interested in creating inclusive and equitable teaching and learning environments is welcome to join the session. At the session, they will learn about a new collection of case studies soon to be available on the Open Case Studies website (http://cases.open.ubc.ca), including additional resources that will facilitate further learning on the issues addressed and assist in their implementation in different contexts. Participants will be the first ones to interact with these new case studies and will walk away with hands-on practice with the materials, ready to continue the conversations with old and new colleagues!
