Building equitable environments in STEM – An open conversation

Event Date & Time

  • March 6, 2018
    1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Event Description

We invite all people who want to build equitable STEM learning cultures to come share the work they are already doing, connect with other departments to build momentum across UBC, and to identify new opportunities for collaboration.

The goal is to bring everyone together to map what initiatives are already ongoing and what initiatives need to exist. We want to identify the barriers that currently prevent people from learning about and connecting around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM fields.

There will be snacks!

Facilitators:
Sophie and Kaitlin are graduate students at UBC passionate about making STEM teaching, learning, and working more equitable, just, and positive for everyone involved and impacted. They each realized that UBC’s STEM communities needed more centralized ways of connecting about equity and diversity and came together last fall to start building these spaces, communities, and relationships. Currently they run STEM Cultures, an interdisciplinary discussion and outreach group open to everyone where people come together on a bi-weekly basis to collectively learn about how STEM interacts with systems of power. Kaitlin is a PhD student in Chemistry and Sophie is pursuing her MSc in Geography.
