CTLT Respectful Space Statement for Events, Programs, and Services

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT)  respectfully acknowledges that its in-person programs, services and events take place on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. We also acknowledge that when we meet virtually, we come together from many different territories.

Attending the CTLT’s events, whether you’ve travelled to get here, crossed campus to be here, or joined online, is an investment of your valuable time and resources. The CTLT is committed to providing a respectful, supportive, and productive environment so you can fully engage in learning with your peers and colleagues.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) envisions a climate in which students, faculty, and staff are provided with the best possible conditions for learning, researching, and working, including an environment that is dedicated to excellence, equity, and mutual respect. UBC strives to realize this vision by establishing employment and educational practices that respect the dignity of individuals and make it possible for everyone to live, work, and study in a positive and supportive environment, free from harmful behaviours such as bullying and harassment. UBC’s commitment to a respectful environment states that:

“Respect for the value of freedom of expression and promotion of free inquiry are central to the University’s mission. However, these freedoms cannot exist without an equally vigorous commitment to recognition of and respect for the freedoms of others, and concern for the well-being of every member of the university community. Excellence in scholarship, teaching and employment activities flows from active concern and respect for others, including their ability to participate meaningfully in the exchange of information, ideas, beliefs and opinions.”

Discrimination & Harassment

Every one of us in this community has a responsibility to create and maintain this environment by exercising consideration and respect in our speech and actions and refraining from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behaviour and speech. For more information about UBC’s harassment and discrimination policies, please see: Policy SC7 – Discrimination (formerly Policy #3).

Harassment includes unwanted behaviours such as deliberate intimidation, unwelcome sexual attention and inappropriate physical contact. Harassment also includes offensive verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination related to and including gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, class, age, language, culture or religion. It is important to understand that  things we say or do may have a harmful  impact on others, despite our intent. Please be accountable for the impact of your actions or words.

If you are being discriminated against or harassed, notice that someone else is experiencing discrimination or harassment, or have any other concerns related to an individual’s or a group’s behaviour, please contact the event host, organizer, or facilitator (whether in person, or through private message for an online event). If you are in-person, you can also contact a member of the CTLT Events team, either in the room or at the front desk, immediately. If there’s an immediate threat to your safety, contact Campus Security at 911 or (604) 822-2222.

Accessibility

CTLT Events, programs, and services strive to be accessible. For in-person events at Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC) , elevators that access all levels are on the lobby level of the East Mall entrance. For online events hosted through Zoom, closed captioning is available, and organizers typically email accessible presentation slides in advance of the session. If you require any other disability and access accommodations, please contact us by email at ctlt.events@ubc.ca. Some requests may require several weeks’ advance notice (e.g. in-person captioning and sign language interpreting).

Photography

In-person CTLT events sometimes have photographers present to capture images to later share on our digital properties and in our promotional materials. If a photographer will be present at a CTLT event, the CTLT Events staff will provide mechanisms, such as coloured stickers, to indicate whether or not you want your picture taken.

All-gender Washrooms

For in-person events at Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC), all-gender washrooms are located on every level of IKBLC, except level 2. Single-gender washrooms are located near the elevators. CTLT Events staff can help provide directions to washrooms in IKBLC as well as in other UBC venues.

Names and Pronouns

CTLT recognizes that many people use a name different from their legal name, and CTLT Events, programs, and services will use chosen names and pronouns of participants. You have the option of indicating your preferred pronouns when registering for CTLT events.
