Growth Mindset in TAing: Developing a Pathway

Event Date & Time

  • January 17, 2018
    9:30 am - 11:30 am

Event Description

In this session, we will explore how promoting growth mindsets in the classroom can positively impact student learning. Moreover, we will emphasize the benefits for personal TA development, both in the classroom and beyond. In the process, we will bust a few educational myths. By the end of this workshop, you will be able to: a) describe how growth vs fixed mindsets impact student learning; b) apply growth-mindset tactics in giving and receiving feedback to your students; and c) start including mindsets in your own reflective practice and professional development.

This session is part of the Teaching Practice theme (which also includes TAing in Large Classrooms: What to Expect, How to Excel and TAing in a Culturally Diverse Classroom) and the Teaching Reflection theme (which also includes After the ISW: Embedding Reflection into Your Teaching Practice and Introduction to Developing Teaching Philosophy and Teaching Portfolio).

The Teaching Assistant (TA) Institute is open to any graduate student who is interested in teaching or TAing, and includes sessions on teaching strategies, teaching development, lesson planning, teaching practice, and teaching reflection.

In order to complete a theme, you much register for and complete each of the sessions that are a part of that theme. The TA Institute webpage will be live in January 2018. You must complete the pre-session module on the TA Institute webpage before the institute begins, and the post session module after the final session in the theme. If you complete the whole theme, you will be eligible for a signed letter of completion to be placed in your Teaching Portfolio.
