Fostering Student-Instructor Rapport

Event Date & Time

  • January 29, 2019
    11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Event Description

Rapport between an instructor and students has the potential to promote student learning.

Rapport develops from positive interactions and involves reciprocity or mutuality. Research suggests that rapport can be cultivated by several strategies, including creating a welcoming and inclusive teaching and learning environment and demonstrating interest in individual students’ learning needs, motivations and overall well-being.

In this session, three instructors in the Department of Sociology (Silvia Bartolic, Becki Ross, and Qiang Fu) will share strategies they use in their teaching to foster rapport and research on fostering student-instructor rapport will be presented.
