This session is open to UBC TAs. This session is not open to staff, faculty or UBC alumni.
This session is designed for TAs who lead tutorials, seminars, or other small-group discussions and want to create engaging, purposeful conversations that support student learning. We will explore how to structure and facilitate discussions that move beyond simply sharing answers, with attention to the role of questioning in encouraging participation, critical thinking, and deeper exploration of ideas. We will also consider common challenges that can arise during discussions and practical strategies for responding in the moment, while keeping the conversation focused on its broader learning purpose.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to facilitate purposeful discussions, use questioning strategies to encourage meaningful student participation, and respond effectively to common challenges that arise in group discussion.
