Event Date & Time

Event Description

How can understanding, implementing, and demonstrating respectful compensation practices with Indigenous partners enhance research, student experiences, and teaching and learning? This workshop will introduce the Indigenous Finance Guidelines (IFG) from the Indigenous Research Support Initiative (IRSI), highlighting the ways that this resource can support Indigenous engagement within teaching and learning as well as more broadly.

In this workshop, facilitators introduce protocols around reciprocal gifting, acknowledgement practices, the impact on research outcomes, and improving student experiences and teaching practices at UBC. The workshop will include a discussion about applying the IFG as a resource when planning for Indigenous guest speakers in courses, and other considerations for creating a generative and reciprocal learning experience when engaging with Indigenous Elders, speakers, researchers and community members in courses.

This session is ideal for researchers, faculty, staff, and more broadly, UBC’s teaching and learning community, that are engaging with and/or hoping to engage with Indigenous partners, and for those wanting to have a deeper understanding in ethical considerations for research, community-based work, and teaching and learning practices.

Learning outcomes include: respectful practices for including an Indigenous guest speaker in your course, a deepened understanding of the complexity of research practices, understanding and knowledge required in community-based work; strengthened knowledge, tools and resources to respond to Goals 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 of the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (specifically addressing Action 14); and demonstrates the purposeful innovation required to decolonize teaching, learning, and research practice.

Facilitators:

  • Emily LeBaron, Manager Administration and Special Initiatives, VP Research and Innovation Indigenous Support Initiative
