Pillar: Transformative Learning
The innovative format of this interdisciplinary pedagogy event uses the structure of “Never have I ever” the truth game so loved by our students to create lively discussion of specific challenges and strategies in teaching at UBC. Each panelist will outline a challenging circumstance in teaching, with brief thoughts on responses to the challenge. S/he will then pose the question (ie. “Never have I ever offered a course without a final exam”). Attendees hold up a green card if they have done this thing, or a red card if they have not; confessions made, invested discussion follows on strategies to address the challenge.
Never have I ever:
• tried to teach something from another discipline (James Charbonneau, Physics)
• found a way to design group work that does not exasperate excellent students (Tiffany Potter, English)
• felt regret at my own grading scheme (Sathish Gopalakrishnan, Electrical and Computer Engineering)
• figured out the best way to use Learning Outcomes (Qian Wang, Asian Studies)
• banned laptops in my classroom (Andrew Owen, Political Science)
• thought of VR and AR technology as simply ‘sexy’ add-ons to teaching and learning (Siobhan McPhee, Geography)
