Canvas course analytics and quiz statistics are potentially useful tools for understanding how students are engaging with course materials and designs. This information can be used for better insight into, and assessment of, effective online teaching and design methods as well as identifying specific areas of challenge and success for students. This workshop will show participants how to locate and use basic analytics such as activity, submissions, participation, and page views in Canvas and how to think about that information in terms of how student engagement and refining teaching practices.  Participants will also learn how to interpret various activity graphs and evaluate quizzes and quiz questions for effectiveness and discuss best practices for evaluating student progress and helping struggling students. This hands-on workshop will also explore new and emerging analytics tools and engage participants in a discussion about what features and feedback could make learning analytics even more useful for instructors and students. Participants will:

  • Explore the learning analytics dashboard in Canvas
  • View how students are interacting with course materials
  • View Canvas quiz statistics and logs
  • Gain insight into how analytics can be used to improve instructional design and student learning
  • Discuss features or functionalities that would make analytics more useful for improving student learning
  • Learn about additional learning analytics tools and projects being piloted at UBC.
Note: This session is geared towards Instructional Support Staff and other support staff who are supporting courses/workshops in the Canvas environment. Please register for this event. Please bring your own laptop.  An Analytics workshop for Instructors will be held on Thursday, March 8 from 12-1:00pm.
