Developing your Skills as a Peer Reviewer of Teaching

Event Date & Time

  • February 8, 2019
    2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Description

Formative peer review of teaching is a UBC-wide initiative to engage in collegial, well-contextualized conversations with teachers about teaching through observation of, and feedback on, classroom teaching.

UBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) and Vantage College are delighted to offer an experiential workshop to help prepare reviewers and reviewees for the peer review of teaching. The workshop integrates the aims and activities of CTLT’s successful workshop on peer review of teaching

·     Understanding the formative peer review of teaching process

·     Providing constructive feedback

·     Conducting appropriate pre- and post-observation meetings

·     Responding to various peer review situations

Within this scope, the upcoming workshop will draw additional attention to issues and opportunities in teaching associated with the language of instruction and linguistic diversity of the UBC community.

Facilitators:

  • Alfredo Ferreira, PhD, is a Lecturer in the Academic English Program (AEP) at UBC Vantage College. In addition to teaching in the AEP’s Science stream, Alfredo designed the original AEP curriculum and chairs the Professional Development Committee at Vantage. His teaching, curriculum development, and research in content-based language programming draw substantially on Vygotksy’s cultural-historical psychology and Halliday’s theory of language as a socially-evolved meaning-making resource. Alfredo’s more specific interests include apprentice writers’ development of capacities to regulate technicality and abstraction across rhetorical contexts.
  • Isabeau Iqbal, PhD: At CTLT, Isabeau is involved with various formative peer review of teaching initiatives, consults with instructors on teaching and learning matters, and facilitates processes and workshops designed to improve teaching and student learning in higher education. In addition, Isabeau conducts Small Group Instructional Feedback and works with instructors who are developing their teaching portfolios.

Location: Orchard Commons (ORCH) – 4062. 6363 Agronomy Rd, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z4
