Event Description

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) builds a bridge between teaching and research in our disciplines. SoTL is the systematic inquiry into student learning to advance the practice of teaching.

The first UBC “Celebrate SoTL” event, hosted by the Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISoTL), the Centre for Teaching, Learning, & Technology (CTLT), and the SoTL Community of Practice, will take place on November 6, 2018.

From taking the very first steps in SoTL to disseminating your SoTL work, this full-day event will be an opportunity for novice and experienced practitioners across UBC to share their stories, connect with peers, and move your SoTL work forward.

Join us for all or some of the events.

Workshop – Getting started with SoTL

Investigating our own teaching practice can be challenging. Where and how do you start? In this hands-on introductory workshop, we will provide tools to help you design a SoTL project, define research questions, identify relevant sources of information, and move your SoTL ideas forward.

Keynote –  Why UBC needs (more) SoTL

Simon Bates, Associate Provost, Teaching and Learning

In this talk, I will offer a perspective on the variety of interpretations of what are the defining characteristics of SoTL and present the case for why UBC not only needs it, but needs more of it. Using examples of what this does and might look like in practice, I will illustrate things that we already have (and we should be thankful for) and things we still need to do more of.

ePoster session – Showcase your SoTL work

Featuring SoTL activity across UBC, this session will provide an opportunity to share your SoTL projects, receive feedback from peers, and disseminate project outcomes, successes and pitfalls. For those considering embarking in researching their teaching practice, this session will be a unique opportunity to engage with colleagues and learn from their SoTL experiences. For those interested in presenting their work, please contact ctlt.isotl@ubc.caLunch will be provided; registration is required.

Workshop – Getting your SoTL work published

Join us for a hands-on session aimed at helping you identify relevant publication outlets, draft the outline of a SoTL dissemination piece, and work on your SoTL project methods and outcomes towards publication. This session is intended for those who have conducted a SoTL investigation and are looking to share it broadly.
