Event Description

Open Education Week, March 5-11, 2018, is an international event whose goal is to highlight how open education can help people meet their goals in teaching and learning. Each year, as part of Open Education Week, UBC showcases diverse events highlighting areas of open teaching and learning. These events include discussion forums, lectures, seminars, workshops, and symposia on topical and timely issues. All of these events are FREE and open to the public, students, faculty, staff and schools. This year’s Open Education Events include:

 

Uncommon Women Panel

Join Kelsey Merkley, from Creative Commons Canada, as she interviews and facilitates a conversation with a few of the UnCommon Women (Rosie Redfield, Kory Wilson, Surita Jhangiani, and Gwen Bird) in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Open in Action

This all day event will include presentations from open advocates at various Institutions who will discuss their projects in detail and share how they have put open education into action. We are very pleased to welcome the BC Federation of Students to start the morning with all of us, as they will highlight the advocacy work they are engaged in from both an institutional perspective as well as governmental. The day will follow with presentations, lightning sessions, and hands-on activities.

OpenStreetMap Mapping Party

Join an introductory session and mapping party and contribute to the freely accessible, non-commercial dataset of the world – OpenStreetMap (OSM). Contributions from this mapping party are toward Building Canada 2020 (BC2020i) – a nation-wide initiative to map all of Canada’s buildings by 2020.

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-athon

Art and feminist communities around the world converge to update Wikipedia entries in an effort to correct the website’s gendered biases, to bolster the representation of female-identifying persons indexed within the ubiquitous online resource, and to encourage female editorship.

Learning Analytics & Open Data Hackathon

Please join us for the 3rd UBC Learning Analytics Hackathon on March 10th and 11. The Hackathon seeks to explore in what ways learning data can be used to benefit students. Participants will have access to open learning data sets and will work towards developing, designing, and proposing tools, reports, and visualizations that could be used to improve student learning and experiences. Innovative proposals or designs could become part of the UBC’s Learning Analytics pilot. During this two-day hackathon, participants will form teams, work hands on an open data set, and propose and design visualizations and dashboards and then show off what they accomplished at the end of the weekend with a brief presentation.
