Leading Discussions .... Effectively

TAG Institute Seminars for the UBC Teaching Community 2006

Class discussions are a powerful way to stimulate higher-level thinking and active learning in students. An engaged discussion provides opportunities for students to articulate their ideas, respond to their classmates‚ points, and develop skills in staking, defending and evaluating different positions on various subjects. Initiating and sustaining a lively, productive discussion can be challenging, but it's not only possible, it is also rewarding! Join Janey and Gwen to explore ideas about how to start a discussion, keep it focused and avoid having it dissolve into chaos (or worse yet the blank stares!).
