Community Service Learning (CSL): Linking academic content to community involvement

Seminars for the UBC Teaching Community

Community Service Learning (CSL) refers to a model of experiential learning that combines classroom learning with volunteer work that achieves community goals. Real-life experiences in the community are linked to academic content through processes of critical reflection such as journal writing, small group discussion and the writing of analytical papers. CSL is gaining momentum at UBC, with over 20 courses, from a wide variety of disciplines using a CSL component. Come to this session to hear examples from such courses and explore how you might get started with CSL in your course. A light lunch will be served.
