ELI Spring Focus Session: Plenary and Project Rounds: Using Evaluation Tools Effectively

10:55 p.m. - 11:35 p.m. Plenary Session: Using Evaluation Tools Effectively

Presenter: Thomas C. Reeves, Professor of Educational Psychology and Instructional Technology, University of Georgia

Description: Whenever people are required to conduct an evaluation of a course or program, the first reaction is usually "Let's use a questionnaire!" A few brave souls may suggest conducting focus group interviews. The truly daring will recommend classroom observations. This session will address the pros and cons of these three popular evaluation tools and present innovative strategies for collecting qualitative and quantitative data with them. "Triangulation" will be recommended, whereby each tool's strengths are maximized and their inherent weaknesses are minimized. Finally, ways of presenting the information yielded by these tools to demonstrate the impact of courses and programs will be delineated.

11:35 p.m. - 11:45 p.m. Follow-Up Q&A with Speakers

11:45 p.m. - 12:00 p.m. Project Round: Using Evaluation Tools Effectively

Presenter: Glenda Morgan, e-Learning Strategist, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Description: A key factor in the success of any research effort to explore the evidence of impact of a teaching intervention or strategy will be the choice of research or evaluation instruments and how they are used. In this session we will discuss how to make choices among different tools and methods based on the characteristics of the project and how to use the tools in ways that maximize the reliability and validity of the data collected. The emphasis will be on tools for qualitative data collection.

12:00 p.m. - 12:15 p.m.Project Round: Using Evaluation Tools Effectively

Title: The Incredible Survey

Presenter: Joshua Morrill, Owner, Morrill Solutions

Description: Surveys are frequently the "quick answer" for many evaluations, yet it is important to think about the data a survey could provide as early in your design process as possible. This brief talk will draw from a few examples to get you to think broadly about the role survey participants can play in a survey, new question techniques to consider, and ways to extend your survey data to make your claims more interesting and more powerful.

12:15 p.m. - 12:25 p.m: Follow-Up Q&A with Speakers
