As a follow-up to the New Faculty and Staff Orientation and the Orientation to Teaching this summer, new faculty are invited to a mid-year check-in with UBC’s Senior Advisor, Teaching and Learning and Academic Director CTLT, Simon Bates, and CTLT educational consultant staff.  Please join us for a morning of discussion and reflection.  CTLT staff will introduce you to programs and services available to support your career as a faculty member at UBC.

Light breakfast will be available at 9:30 am and our program will start at 10:00 am.

By the end of the two hours, participants will:

  1.   Reflect on the term, what you learned, and what you wish you would have known.
  2.   Learn about the changing teaching and learning landscape at UBC.
  3. Make some concrete plans for your teaching and your teaching skills development

Simon Bates, M.A. (Cantab), Ph.D.

As Senior Advisor to the Provost on teaching and learning, Simon Bates works on a number of academic strategy projects, with current focus on educational leadership and learning technology. As Academic Director of UBC’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, he oversees the provision of academic support services to the teaching and learning community, providing an implementation pathway for these strategic projects. Simon Bates is also a tenured Professor of Teaching in the Physics and Astronomy department where he teaches introductory physics courses.
