Conversations with Distressed Students: Planning for the Anticipated and Unexpected

Event Date & Time

  • February 17, 2016
    1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Event Description

Working with and supporting a distressed student can be both challenging and rewarding.  As a Teaching Assistant or peer helping a fellow grad student, how can you develop and use your skills of listening to, acknowledging, and supporting students in distress while at the same time maintaining appropriate boundaries? This interactive workshop will explore how to structure an interaction with a student or peer that enables you to effectively provide the appropriate level of support, no matter what type of concern the student has or how serious it is.  This will include how to communicate with students or peers about concern for their wellbeing, manage distress in the moment, maintain boundaries appropriate to your role, facilitate an action plan including appropriate referrals and follow-up, arrange for back-up as needed, and preserve your own wellbeing.
